Reading this is like having a great conversation with a friend . Willie talks to the reader without holding back. You feel as if you were with him on his journey, through the rough years, the great times, the breaks ups and make ups, the births of his children, his wins and his losses and you understand and appreciate him even more. You see how his optimism, driven by his relationship with God, spurred him to create songs, compelled him to "sing for his supper" and helped him survive the lows of the Nashville Machine to his triumphant, natural and gloriously successful musical expression. A great journey, a joyous read! I bought 3 of Willie's books a little while back. I eagerly opened The Tao of Willie and sat back to learn fine Texas wisdom, to hear his drawl ~ to be enlightened. I enjoyed it, learned a bit but it didn't fit into that Willie expectation that I was hoping for. The second one was much the same as the first so when I finished it, I waited a while to read this, the longest one.This gem was exactly what I was hoping for. It was still replete with little asides that he might murmur in a concert but they weren't peppered in each paragraph. His love of Sister Bobbie, his honesty with his former wives, his respect and his simple way of thinking that makes perfect sense was the Tao of Willie. I loved this. I love his love.
